Gianluigi Buffon believes Luciano Spalletti was the best coach available to Juventus following the sacking of Igor Tudor, and insists Massimiliano Allegri needs to take advantage of Milan’s lack of Champions League football this season, although “it is better to be in all competitions”.

The Italy and Juventus legend spoke about some of the best coaches in Serie A during an interview with Radio Rai on Monday.

The head of the national team delegation also spoke about the upcoming World Cup play-offs and the prospect of having a “meeting” before the next international break.

Buffon believes his former national team colleague Spalletti was the best choice for Juventus when they decided to replace Igor Tudor last month, but claims the former CT has not yet had the chance to make his mark on the Bianconeri squad.

“Without a doubt, he was the best coach available on the market and the best professional that Juventus can trust at this moment,” Buffon said of Spalletti (via TMW).

“The only concern is that Luciano has not yet had the opportunity to establish his own project, because he could not have a say in the transfer market. Someone as demanding as him manages to do the best regardless of the transfer situation.”

Buffon also spoke about Milan, who currently sit at the top of the Serie A table after Week 13. Like Napoli when they won the Scudetto last season, the Rossoneri are not participating in any European competition this season.

“I always think it’s good to be competing on all fronts, riding the wave in every competition,” Buffon said. “At certain times it is difficult to get the most out of everything in each match, but with the right mentality it is better to be in all competitions.

“Allegri and Milan did not choose not to be in the Champions League, but it turns out they could take advantage of it.”

Buffon was also asked if he thinks working with Napoli’s Conte is “exhausting”.

He replied: “No, no. Antonio Conte is someone who knows what he wants and has the ability to make everyone adhere to the common goal.”
