When Carlos Sainz signed with Williams for the 2026 Formula 1 season, fans knew the dynamic between the passionate Spaniard and the talented Alex Albon was going to be entertaining. Ahead of this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, the duo proved that they are already the funniest driver pairing on the grid.

During a written media interview shared by motor sportsteammates were asked about their goals for the qualifying session at the notoriously difficult Suzuka circuit. Albon, ever the pragmatist who knows exactly where the Williams car sits in the midfield pecking order, offered a very matter-of-fact answer.
“A great achievement would be Q2…” Albon calmly stated to the interviewer.
Before the interviewer could even respond, Sainz leaned directly into the microphone and confidently declared, “POLI POSITION!”
The comic timing was perfect. Albon’s head immediately snapped towards his teammate, eyes widening in utter, pure surprise. He slowly repeated the phrase “Pole position?!” while looking at Sainz as if the former Ferrari driver had completely lost his mind.

Fans love the “best driver combination”
The clip immediately blew up on Instagram and rose to the top of the Formula 1 subreddit. Fans couldn’t get enough of the contrast between Albon’s grounded reality check and Sainz’s almost delusional (and joking) confidence in his machinery.
“That should always be the right goal,” commented Instagram user legomaster58100, endorsing Sainz’s champion mentality.
Others were simply there for the comedic value of the Thai-British facial expressions. “Alex is everything,” added gridlineellie, while user gregdowse officially named them the “Best Driving Couple.”

Can they really achieve it?
Let’s be honest… getting pole position at Suzuka in a Williams is a pipe dream for 2026. The team is still fighting hard in the midfield with a car that is massively overweight and, as we’ve seen Albon already struggling with reliability, the team has a lot to do.
Getting both cars into Q3 would be a huge win for the Atlassian Williams F1 team. But you have to respect Sainz’s energy. He brought a winning pedigree to the Grove-based team, and even if pole position is wildly out of reach for now, having a driver still gunning for the overall top spot is exactly the kind of motivation the team needs.
