Marquette women’s basketball led Seton Hall 23-17 late in the first quarter Wednesday night at the McGuire Center.

Marquette women’s basketball led Seton Hall 40-36 at halftime.

A layup by Skylar Forbes with 6:31 left in the third quarter gave Marquette a 49-42 lead over Seton Hall, its largest lead of the game.

Not until that point in the game.

After that point, during the final 16:31 of the game, Marquette made three field goals. They missed their final 10 shots of the third quarter as the Pirates went on a 12-0 run to end the frame and take a 54-49 lead. Marquette then made three of its first four shots of the fourth quarter, and Charia Smith’s layup with 7:17 left made the score 61-56 Seton Hall. You’ll notice that these three Marquette baskets didn’t alter Seton Hall’s five-point lead from the start of the period and about three minutes had passed.

Marquette didn’t do it attempt Another field goal until three minutes were up. In the final 4:30 of the game, Marquette attempted nine field goals and missed all nine. Marquette’s only points in the final 7:17 of the game were two free throws by Skylar Forbes, who played 32 minutes off the bench and led Marquette in scoring with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting. I ask you: What is the point of taking Forbes off the bench if he is going to play 80% of the minutes? What is happening here?

Damn, “What’s going on here?” is an apt question for the entirety of the last nine games – almost half of the Big East schedule! — for Marquette. Just moment after moment of the controller going offline since the Golden Eagles split Villanova and Creighton in half in back-to-back games in early January, and are now 10-6 in the conference after starting 5-2 with one of the road losses against UConn. In this case, it was simply bad shooting that doomed the Golden Eagles, as they only had 11 turnovers, and that was in a game where Seton Hall (40% field goals, no field goals in the final 3:43) wasn’t much of an issue either.

Oh hey, by the way: UConn comes to Milwaukee on Saturday, which effectively sets the Golden Eagles up for a third straight loss, and unless they REALLY figure something out in the next 10 days, that will very quickly turn into four straight losses.

Next: That game against No. 1 UConn will begin at noon CT on Valentine’s Day, and FS1 will have the broadcast. The Huskies are a perfect 26-0 this season after outscoring Creighton 75-30 in the final three quarters of a 94-44 win in Storrs on Wednesday night.
