Jeff King grew up not far from Blacksburg and starred at Pulaski County High School before committing to Virginia Tech. King enrolled at Virginia Tech in 2001, in a class that included DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Jones, Bryan Randall, Justin Hamilton, Will Montgomery and James Anderson, among others. Looking back, it’s one of the best recruiting classes in Virginia Tech history.
King would play in 58 games, beginning his final two seasons with the Hokies at tight end before embarking on an eight-year NFL career. From 2006 to 2013, King played for the Panthers and Cardinals, appearing in 108 games and starting 84. He caught 156 career passes and 12 touchdowns.

As soon as his playing career ended, King joined the Chicago Bears as a scouting intern. That didn’t last long, as King was promoted to pro scout in 2016. In 2019, he became assistant director of pro scouting, and in 2021, he took over as director of pro scouting. From 2022 to 2023, King was promoted to co-director of player personnel before becoming senior director of player personnel in 2024.
Now, King has earned his biggest promotion yet. The Bears promoted him to assistant general manager under Ryan Poles. Former Chicago assistant general manager Ian Cunningham has left to take over as Falcons general manager.
The promotion also came on King’s 43rd birthday.

King’s promotion means he is now just one step away from becoming an NFL general manager. He has already interviewed for a job, Los Angeles Chargers in 2024.
While King was known for his success on the gridiron at Virginia Tech, he also played some basketball for Seth Greenberg and the Hokies.
