The Green Party has chosen a former journalist and political commentator as a candidate in the partial elections of CajaLly next month.
Gareth Hughes is the seventh candidate announced for the elections, after the death of the member of Labor Senedd, Hefin David.
Hughes, who lives in Caphilly, said Wales needs a “positive political change” that “puts people and the planet first.”
Among his priorities, he said, were “green works for people where they live” and better public services, including more night buses and “warm and safe housing.”
Before being a journalist, Hughes had a career in the public housing sector, working for housing associations.
He was a ITV Wales television reporter and also commented on Welsh policy, even for the BBC Radio Wales and Radio Cymru.
After confirming his selection, he said: “The Green Party is the only left -wing game that really aligns with my values, and I am determined to fall a strong, honest and committed voice in the Senedd,” he said.
He said that his other key objectives were to build “stronger communities with empowered local voices” and promote a “more fair and greener future addressing the weather.”
The partial election for the Welsh Parliamentary constituency of Cajaphilly will take place on October 23.
The deadline for nominations is 1600 BST on Friday.
The other candidates that have been announced are:
-
Conservatives – Gareth Potter
-
Work – Richard Tunnicliffe
-
CYMRU A PICTURES – Lindsay Whittle
-
Welsh Liberal Democrats – Steve Aicheler
