Hawaii Island Police are investigating a series of small wildfires that broke out this morning along the Queen Kaahumanu Highway in Kona.

Police said that around 8 a.m., at least eight fires measuring approximately 100 square feet each were observed along the road between Hulikoa Drive and Hina Lani Street.

Hawaii County firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fires and hot spots. No injuries were reported and no property was damaged.

Police said the cause of the fires was still unknown, but they were suspicious in nature.

“Law enforcement is on high alert in light of the current National Weather Service,” Maj. Thomas Shopay III said in a news release. “We ask the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”

The red flag warning, which covers the leeward side of all islands as well as the interior and northern side of the Big Island, remains in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday due to strong winds and low humidity.

Anyone with information about the wildfires is asked to contact Officer Kesia Quiocho at 808-935-3311 or. Anonymous tips can be reported to Crime Stoppers at 808-961-8300.
