Henkell Freixenet is in talks to acquire a majority stake in French champagne producer Maison Pommery & Associés.

A statement from Maison Pommery yesterday (June 2) confirmed that it had begun talks with Henkell International, a subsidiary of Henkell Freixenet.

The talks, which will last for two months, revolve around “a strategic combination proposal” that would allow Henkell Freixenet to acquire a majority stake in the French wine group.

Maison Pommery said the “proposed partnership between two family groups would create a global player in the sparkling wine sector.”

The group’s board has formed an ad hoc committee made up of mostly independent directors to monitor the talks. He added that there is no guarantee that the talks will lead to an agreement.

The talks are subject to due diligence, final contracts, consultations and regulatory approvals, Maison Pommery added.

The group also noted that it will “continue its activities in the normal course of business.”

Henkell Freixenet declined to comment further on the news when approached Drinks only“due to confidentiality considerations.”

Maison Pommery operates in the French regions of Champagne, Provence and Camargue, as well as in the Douro Valley in Portugal.

In last year’s group results, published in March, Maison Pommery, formerly Vranken-Pommery Monopole, saw its consolidated revenue fall 3.6% to €293.2 million ($340.4 million).

Net income rose 3,752% to €31.9 million, attributed to the sale of Heidsieck & Co Monopole last year to Lanson-BCC.

Operating income also increased by 83% to €64.1 million, driven by a net capital gain of €44.3 million from the sale of Heidsieck & Co Monopole, as well as “controlled business activity in a challenging market environment in 2025.”

However, at the end of last year the group also had a net financial debt of 754.4 million euros, a reduction of 3.9 million euros compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, Henkell Freixenet recorded net income of €1.25 billion in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 0.5%. Western Europe led the increase and accounted for 32% of total sales.

Growth was driven by the Prosecco, Crémant, Aperitivo and non-alcoholic segments despite a market the German company described as “challenging.”
