Once more or less, I do something that I call “look at the money time.” I check my credit cards and bank accounts to see exactly what is happening. What subscription have I forgotten? How late in retirement am I? Is there a recovery program to order without problems? The greatest financial enigma for me is my American Express Platinum card. I wrote about the love of the Z for Amex last year and in the process I sold my millenary skeptic being throughout the agreement, despite the annual price of $ 695. Now, the annual rate of Amex Platinum is reaching the whopping of $ 895. The jump has turned “to look at the time of money” to worry and judge about extravagance of money. “
The Amex Platinum card has existed since 1984, and in the field of elegant credit cards, it is one of the most elegant, along with the Chase Sapphire reserve. Of course, black cards are ultraelite, but they also come with an ultraelite annual rate of thousands of dollars. The most accessible AMEX and CHASE cards have a champagne taste in a sensation of beer budget, explains Ted Rossman, an analyst of the Senior credit card industry in Bankrate.
“As for the mass market, they are at the upper end,” says Rossman. “I am asking if this is even the mass market.”
Hard the same.
In an increasingly stratified consumption landscape, elegant rewards cards are state symbols. They provide access to offers and special advantages. They are a way of separating from the rest. They can also feel like a trap, especially for those of us who are not particularly inclined to do a lot of points counts. Is access to an increasingly overpopulated airport hall worth 1% of the average income in the United States? While I have enjoyed the Amyx experience, I also have my doubts.
Amex used to be the type of card that was reserved mainly for richer and older people, and if he could not pay it, he could always lie and say that he did not want an Amex card because many merchants did not take them. But that has changed. AMEX is accepted everywhere, and young people go into mass: millennials and gene generation represent about 60% of their new customers worldwide. The company is committed to its enthusiastic customer, young and older base, will not be scared in the 29% increase in its annual rate.
AMEX is selling its increase of $ 200 to consumers by adding new benefits that, he says, could be worth up to $ 3,500. New annual credits for $ 400 were added that can be spent with the Resy Restaurant Reserve application (which it owns), $ 300 with Lululemon and $ 120 with Uber One, among others, and has increased a loan that can be allocated to digital entertainment services such as YouTubetv and Paramount+ to $ 300 per year. AMEX has also increased hotel loans to which Platinum members can access, and are retaining existing benefits, such as credits for airline rates, Walmart+, Saks and Equinox. It is part of the continuous change of Amyx Platinum of the travel card to the lifestyle.
“Every time these changes occur, justification is the whole series of additional benefits that they are marketing. And to be clear, those benefits can easily overcome the greatest annual rate, the main word that is there. can“says Nick Ewen, senior editorial director at The Points Guy.
Reading those benefits, my first instinct is that I should absolutely Keep the card. But I spent last week more or less looking at what I am really using and … man, I would like to be more organized. I received the Credit Walmart+ every month, but I have never asked for a single thing from Walmart+. In addition to the welcome bonus, I have not even managed to accumulate 10,000 more. I had forgotten to change many of my qualification transmission services to my platinum card, so I’m missing that money. I asked for the cheapest article that I really wanted from Saks to recover the $ 50, but even after the discount, I ended up spending $ 8, thanks mainly to the pressure of the platinum card. As much as the Airport Lounge is a small and nice gift, I miss the camaraderie of the usual airport bar.
For what I enrolled to get the Amex Platinum card, it is essentially a “high -end coupons book,” says Michael Miller, an analyst at Morningstar Research, and depends on me to discover how to use those coupons. “You have to remodel your spending patterns around Amyx’s business partners,” he says.
If Amex increases its annual rate too high, it runs the risk of losing some customers, but so far, people have generally been willing to put into account. The company says it has a 98% retention rate on the platinum card.
“They have often asked me, what is the roof? Where can these annual rates go? And, in a transparent way, we probably didn’t see that roof,” says Ewen.
“Customers understand what they are obtaining and are willing to pay for it,” said Anthony Cirri, Amyx Executive Vice President of US consumption cards, in a statement sent by email.
If some consumers are left, from a corporate perspective, it may not be the worst in the world. The launch of AMEX to the merchants is that offering discounts and credits will direct a customer base of Amex Platinum rich in its direction. It is not clear exactly how much each merchant enters as part of the agreement, but according to Amex, its partners have more than a quarter of the general cost of the rewards. Discussing the American Express Association with Saks in a 2018 earning call, CEO Stephen Squeri said that Amoex’s cost was zero. The higher the rate on the platinum card, the more self -selection of high -income consumers that merchants want to enter the door. And people who cannot support the cost can always degrade another Amex card while remaining in the general ecosystem.
“Part of the philosophy here is to double a truly luxury audience,” says Rossman. “And it almost seems to me that if they lose customers as a result, that is more a characteristic than an error.”
AMEX is also not wrong with the remodeling of habits. To try to take advantage of Lululemon and Resy credits before they expire at the end of the quarter (they are divided into four pieces throughout the year), I made my first purchase of Lululemon and sent a text message to my boyfriend to make plans to go to an elegant restaurant during the weekend. Nor are the purchases that I would have made if it were not for the deadline of the platinum card that bites my heels. And yes, I spent more than expected in Lululemon.
Many people love His Amex platinum cards. Madison Traughber, 26, in Atlanta, is one of those generas Zs who is obsessed with him. “You can get it out of my cold, dead hands,” she says. She had anticipated the increase in the rate and thought it would be more. He hastened Lululemon the day after the announcement of Amex Partnership and sprified others in the record to see if they were doing the same. “It’s almost a sign that you’re known,” she says. The most important benefit for her is the Airport Lounge: sometimes uses it to impress senior coworkers. “They take you more seriously,” she says.
Not everyone is so anxious for paying more. Jim Hennessy, 50, member of the 15 -year -old platinum card in Chicago, says he is still deciding whether to keep the card with the increase in the rate. The classrooms are really full of chaotic 20 and so many (my words, not theirs). He likes Uber credit and some of the hotel rewards, but he has to do the calculations to see if they are still worth it. “I think part of the exclusivity of the card has disappeared,” he says.
The company says that it is investing heavily in rooms, including the opening of new ones in Amsterdam, Salt Lake City and Newark. They are also launching a smaller “Sidecar” room concept in 2026. Ewen, from the type of points, Pooh-Poohs The Lounge as part of the consumer equation, telling me that it is a “good value added beyond the monetary value that I am obtaining from my card.” Rossman reminds me that, although travel reward cards “get all the owners”, the most basic cash return cards are actually the type of favorite card of the Americans.
Talking to people, I go from one place to another on whether this card of almost $ 900 is worth it. A friend tells me that she is a “monster” of Amex and loves, but if he stops traveling so much for the work, he will probably dispute it, given the cost and get a setback card. Another says that the card is “drugs”, and because his family is military, the rate is renounced. My modest of the west medium, and the modest voice of the mother’s western environment in the back of my head, I tell myself that the price is ridiculous. A positive: the Amyx application now helps you track how and if you are using the benefits. A negative: you still have to register in many of the benefits, and are not automatically activated if you forget. A positive: I get a good amount of Uber discounts thanks to Amex. A negative: I take more ubers than I would do it differently. I am lucky to be able to pay my credit card bill at the end of each month, so I do not have to weigh the cost-benefit scenarios of interest versus advantages. In addition, I press the fact that rewards cards are transfers of wealth of the poor to the rich to the back of my mind.
“I think people really need to execute numbers, and there is a cost for complexity,” says Rossman.
I am quite sure that I have a little more time to decide if I want to keep my Amex Platinum before the new highest rate between in force. The fact that you have not yet raised that deadline is also a sign that it is probably better to cancel, but hope eternal outbreak. Maybe it becomes a spreadsheet. Maybe I can eat and drink through a few hundred dollars in the room. Or maybe it is another lesson that the economy works best for people who have time, money and patience to play it well. The platinum card is not just advantages, it is about working the system.
“You have to follow the game here,” says Miller.
