‘If they want to sell him, he has to play’: Barcelona sent a strong message about the future of Marc-André ter Stegen

Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s future at Barcelona remains unclear amid speculation he could leave in January in a bid to boost his World Cup chances.

Hansi Flick has made it clear that Joan García is his number one, while Ter Stegen has been warned that he needs to play regularly if he wants to be Germany’s first choice at the 2026 World Cup.

Turkish clubs are rumored to be interested in Ter Stegen’s services but the goalkeeper is “not convinced” by the offers received so far, according to La Vanguardia.

The report adds that Ter Stegen is currently considering staying and sacking his contact, who will run until 2028, as he refuses to be pressured into an exit.

“If they want to sell him, he has to play, so he will have more market value,” seems to be the message from those close to Ter Stegen about his current situation.

However, it will be very difficult for Ter Stegen to see any playing time between now and the end of the season if Garcia stays fit. The Copa del Rey represents an opportunity for Ter Stegen to play, although Hansi Flick has said he has not yet chosen his goalkeeper and could still opt for Wojciech Szczęsny.

Barcelona will face Guadalajara in the competition on Tuesday, and it will certainly be interesting to see who Flick chooses as his starting goalkeeper for the match.
