Illinois announced Friday that head wrestling coach Mike Poeta has been placed on indefinite administrative leave.

In a statement, athletic director Josh Whitman said Poeta “will remain away from the program while the University conducts an investigation into possible violations of his employment agreement arising from possible noncompliance with the University’s fiscal control policies.”

The statement did not explain what those violations were.

Assistant coach Jeremy Hunter will serve as interim head coach in Poeta’s absence.

Poets was named head wrestling coach in 2021 and competed for the Illini from 2004 to 2008. He was a three-time All-American and two-time Big Ten champion.

Illinois is 5-2 this season. Their next games are Sunday in Nashville against Cornell and Lehigh.
