Investigation opens after death of racist murderer in prison

An investigation has been opened into the death of a man in prison, who was jailed for killing an 82-year-old man in a racist attack and plotting to bomb mosques.

Pavlo Lapshyn died at HMP Wakefield on 23 September. An inquest was opened and adjourned at Wakefield and Leeds Coroner’s Court on Friday.

A date for the full investigation has not yet been set, and the prison service said the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman would also investigate, as is usual in the case of deaths in custody.

The 37-year-old Ukrainian student was serving a life sentence after admitting stabbing Mohammed Saleem in Small Heath, Birmingham, in 2013 and planning explosions near mosques in Walsall, Tipton and Wolverhampton.
