During a pre-season media interaction, DC head coach Hemang Badani confirmed that there has been no official communication yet regarding Starc’s involvement. “I don’t have any update from Cricket Australia on (Mitchell) Starc. I will let you know once everything clears up,” Badani said, indicating the situation remains uncertain for now.
Despite the lack of clarity, DC captain Axar Patel struck a more optimistic tone and expressed confidence that the left-arm pacer could join the team at any time. “Starc can come at any time, there is no specific date. If he doesn’t come, there is no temptation to replace a left-arm spinner with a left-arm spinner. Natarajan has been fine and is 100% fit. If necessary, Starc and the Impact player,” Axar said. He also reiterated his reservations about the Impact Player rule, adding that as a versatile player, he is not entirely in favor of it.
Backing Axar’s optimism, DC Cricket Director Venugopal Rao offered a positive outlook on Starc’s eventual arrival. “Starc is coming. Just waiting for clearance from Cricket Australia,” he said, suggesting the delay is more procedural than a long-term concern.
Badani further explained that Starc’s availability depends on fitness and workload management. “It depends on when I bowl and get the all-clear,” he added, stressing that the final decision rests with Cricket Australia’s medical and administrative team.
Starc may miss DC’s opening games
Starc, 36, is expected to miss at least the opening phase of the tournament and Cricket Australia is reportedly closely monitoring his workload. His absence, even if temporary, would be an important factor for Delhi Capitals, given his role as the team’s spearhead.
The left-arm pacer was DC’s second highest wicket-taker last season, picking up 14 wickets in 11 matches. The franchise had roped him in after acquiring his services for Rs 11.75 crore in the auction.
The Delhi Capitals will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on April 1.
