James Garner rejected the idea that Everton’s season is already over, pointing to the fact that they are within striking distance of the European places in the Premier League standings.
“The season is definitely not over,” he said. “The Carabao Cup and FA Cup season is over, but we still have half the (Premier League) season left.

“You see how close the league is, if you win a game you’re back up there, so the season is definitely not over.
“We are definitely a better team than last season, and we have shown that we are in a bad patch at the moment, but we hope that in one or two games we can get out of it.
“It’s very disappointing,” he said. “(It was) difficult to get back into the game. We were the better team in the second half, and we got the goal and then in overtime, everyone was devastated.
“You know, we’re at a minimum with the players and with all the injuries and the Afcon guys and all the suspensions and stuff.

“I think we were a lot better in the second half. I think if we had started the game the way we started in the second half, it probably would have been a different result.
“But there are not many positives to take away, other than we were a much better team in the second half, but it is not good enough, so we have to start the games like that and hopefully in the future we will get better results.”
“So staying in the game and turning it into penalties was good, but it wasn’t good enough because the boys and I need to put the ball in the back of the net and there are no excuses for that.
“We know what the terrain is like here, and if we put them in the game as quickly as we can with our pressure and intensity, 9 times out of 10 it ends up being a good game for us and not for them.

“That’s what we couldn’t do in the first half, but like I said, in the second half we were much better.”
But Garner couldn’t offer any update on his contract situation: “No, it’s pretty much the same as before.”
