As always, the latest edition of The classic Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund played with great intensity, with the players from both teams fighting hard in the duels. In one of those duels, in the 20th minute, BVB defender Nico Schlotterbeck made a tough tackle on Bayern right-back Josip Stanišić, hit the ball first, but then found Stanišić’s shins first with more than reasonable force. Even Schlotterbeck himself admitted that he was lucky not to have been sent off for the tackle.
After the match, Stanišić agreed with that sentiment and stated that he did not agree with the referee’s decision not to show Schlotterbeck the red card. “I don’t know how the referee decided that it wasn’t a red card. Yes, he received the ball first, but the red card is there to protect the players. For me it was a clear red and I told the referee that too.”

From his perspective, the Bundesliga refereeing has not been consistent in its decisions, referencing an incident with Bayern Munich loanee João Palhinha last season and complaining that Schlotterbeck had not received a red card. “We had a similar situation with João Palhinha against Bochum, where he received the ball and then hit the opponent, and received a straight red, and then we lost that game. I think Schlotterbeck was luckier to stay on the field today,” said the defender.
