But it is still a team with so much quality that it must be considered a failure if we only cling to the Champions League because of a technicality.
Jurgen Klopp has condemned Slot at Anfield
To be completely fair to Slot, it’s not as if his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp, achieved incredible success season after season.
But you always had the feeling, even in the “difficult” seasons, that things were being worked on behind the scenes to achieve some kind of sustainable improvement starting in the second half of the campaign.
Take the 2020/21 season, for example, with injuries decimating our defensive line and forcing players like Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams into the spotlight.

At the beginning of March, Liverpool were in eighth place, but won eight of their remaining 10 Premier League games to secure a top-three finish in the table. That’s the way to win the title. Or, at least, be among the top two.
But it seems incredibly unlikely that this toothless Reds team will win 80% of the remaining seven league games in their current form, and that’s despite having an arguably more functional starting XI to work with.
In fact, to get close to the same points total in 2020/21, Slot’s Liverpool would have to win all their remaining games (which would take us to 70 points).
However, as we approach April, there is simply no sign that we will be able to get our act together for the business end of the season.

If our Dutch coach wants to survive beyond the summer, he has to show that he can inspire similar change to his predecessor.
