The last remodeling of Liverpool’s midfield was in 2023.

Jurgen Klopp and then sporting director Jorg Schmadtke revamped the Reds’ midfield, bringing in the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

It’s fair to say those deals have been a success, with Liverpool adding the EFL Cup to their trophy collection in 2024 before winning last season’s 2024/25 Premier League title.

However, the time has come to consider midfield adjustments, due in part to uncertainty over the future of some players.

We could see Curtis Jones sold, for example. while the local star is stuck in a new contract. Endo, like Jones, is out of contract in 2027 and the club has heard several offers for the Japan captain in previous transfer windows.

Sandro Tonali leaves Newcastle

Alexis Mac Allister has been heavily linked with Real Madrid and it remains to be seen what kind of conclusion they reach in contract negotiations with Gravenberch and Szoboszlai as well.

Unsurprisingly, we saw several midfield targets associated with an Anfield move before the window opened. And one of those who have been canvassed to reach an agreement is Sandro Tonali, Newcastle’s playmaker.

The 25-year-old has been on Tyneside since 2023, establishing himself as a constant presence in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

But it looks like the Italian international’s time with the Toon could be coming to an end. Under contract until 2028, the player’s agent revealed last week that perhaps the time had come to consider his future.

Liverpool contact Tonali

Newcastle will be against losing him for nothing in two years and could therefore be forced to consider offers this summer.

And a report in TEAMtalk now claims that Liverpool, as well as Arsenal and Manchester City, have begun talks with the midfielder’s entourage over the terms of the deal.

“Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City have all contacted Tonali’s team,” the report reads.

Tonali wants to return to Serie A

But now the Premier League suitors seem to be in second place: Tonali prefers to return to Serie A for family reasons.

“The midfielder’s heart pushes him back to Italy, where he wants to be reunited with his family,” the report reads.

“Juventus and Inter Milan are very interested in making this happen.”
