Liverpool are in the process of overhauling the center of their defence.

We could see Ibrahima Konate move on at the end of the season. He is in the final months of his Liverpool contract amid reports he could head to Real Madrid.

In another 12 months, both Joe Gomez and captain Virgil van Dijk will see their contracts expire. As things stand, it would be a surprise to see any of them in a red shirt beyond the summer of 2027.

Deals were struck in January for Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Jeremy Jacquet to join in the summer. Another promising youngster, Mor Talla Ndiaye, was also recruited for the under-21 set-up.

Leoni is getting closer to returning

But the man who initiated the reorganization was Giovanni Leoni.

The Italian was signed last summer from Parma for £26m, but disaster struck on his debut. The 19-year-old tore his ACL in an EFL Cup match against Southampton, ending his first campaign in tragic circumstances.

Leoni is not expected to play again this season, but there is a plan for his return. According to a report by Mondo Primavera Leoni is on his way back to first team training at the end of April, meaning he is just a few weeks away from returning.

“The current plan calls for returning to training with the team at the end of April 2026,” the report reads.

“This ‘new signing’ represents a fundamental piece of Liverpool’s defensive plan, as the club is investing heavily in the youngster and sees him as a cornerstone for the years to come.”
