Michigan State earned a victory for the first time in months on Saturday in the Motor City, defeating Maryland by the final score of 38-28 at Ford Field in Detroit. The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Spartans and was their first in conference play this season.

Saturday was the final game of the season for the Spartans, who finished 4-8 overall and will not be headed to a bowl game for the fourth consecutive season. So after the game, many began to look toward the future of Michigan State football and specifically what will happen under head coach Jonathan Smith. He is currently on the bench and we do not know at this time if he will return for his third season at Michigan State or if athletic director J Batt will go in a different direction.
Couch and Solari discussed Smith’s fate and the situation following the win over Maryland on Saturday. For Couch, it’s clear he doesn’t believe Smith will be retained for a third year. Solari does not seem so sure that a change is coming.
