The man who fatally fired a married couple in an Elkhorn bar last year was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Thomas Routt, 58, was sentenced at the Walworth County Circuit Court on September 26 to life imprisonment without the possibility of probation in two countless crimes of intentional homicide of first degree for the deaths of Emerson and Gina Weingart on the sports page Barr, 29½ S. Wisconsin St., on February 1, 2024, according to the records of the court online.
In a June jury trial, Routt was convicted of the two first -degree intentional homicide charges, as well as four other serious crimes: attempted homicide at the first degree, armed handft, possession of a firearm by a criminal and possession of methamphetamine, according to the records of the online court.
On February 1, 2024, Gina Weingart was working behind the bar while her husband, Emerson, and a patron were also inside when Routt threw a gun and told the three not to move. Routt told police that Gina Weingart said he would call the police if Routt did not keep his gun. Then Routt said that Gina Weingart slapped the gun and left and hit her. Routt then took money from the record, shot Emerson Weingart and continued and shot at the other pattern while fleding the bar, according to the criminal complaint.
After leaving the bar, Routt tried to get rid of the gun and ammunition at a service station, which the detectives then found in a nearby garbage container, according to the complaint. Police arrested Routt three days after the shooting.
Due to his previous criminal record and to have a sentence for serious crime, Routt was not allowed to possess firearms, according to online judicial records. He was also in supervision of the active community at the time of shooting.
