Harry Maguire’s late header secured Manchester United’s first win at Anfield in almost a decade and inflicted Liverpool fourth consecutive defeat.

It was a spectacular victory for Rubén Amorim’s team against their biggest rivals and the manager described it as “the biggest victory in my time at Manchester United”.

The back pages of Monday’s newspapers convey the magnitude of the result, which also gave United their first consecutive Premier League victory with the Portuguese.

“Amorim have been under a lot of pressure but now it’s back-to-back wins and they’ve beaten Liverpool,” Clinton Morrison said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast. “It’s a big win for United and puts them at the top of the league.

“United’s front three had a lot of pace. They wanted to cause problems for Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, and they did. It was probably one of the only games where I thought Van Dijk looked nervous in the first half.

“That’s because United’s game plan worked brilliantly. They were defending with their numbers and were good on the counter-attack.

“They always face the big teams, we saw that last season, so now they have to face Brighton next week.

“Whether they can do it remains a big question.”
