For the tenth time since the start of the division in Scotland’s top flight, Aberdeen will be in the bottom six.

The fact that they are facing a battle to preserve their unbroken status in the top tier has almost obscured their failure to finish in the top half of the table. After all, they still have more important things to do.

However, they host 11th-placed Kilmarnock at Pittodrie on Saturday, knowing that a win would surely end any thoughts of being dragged into a play-off against Partick Thistle, Arbroath or the Dons’ Scottish Cup conquerors and finalists Dunfermline.

Stephen Robinson has secured the services of midfielder Findlay Marshall, who is currently on loan at Arbroath, for next season and beyond as the club signed the Stonehaven youngster to a two-year extension.

It was an announcement fans expected the club to make after their outstanding Championship campaign this season, where they scored 15 goals and provided four assists. Marshall’s Dons career ended before it began under Jimmy Thelin.

It was a smart move and now it’s Marshall’s turn to step up and become a first-team starter next season.

Aberdeen’s post-split fixtures look favorable with Killie and St Mirren both in Granite City and Robinson has now had more time with the players.

The Northern Irishman is addressing issues within the team as he seeks greater unity that seemed to have been lost.

If they can build an eight-point lead over Killie on Saturday night with an already superior goal difference, they can start seriously planning for next season.
