It is unknown what Michael Malone’s current plans are for FC Barcelona’s Malian big man, but one has to imagine that Keita will play considerable minutes during his first year at UNC.

If Tar Heel Nation needed another reason to be excited about Keita’s imminent arrival, here’s one. According to Keita’s 247Sports recruiting profile, Keita is now a 5-star.
If international players earned inclusion in the 247Sports Top 150, Keita would be the highest-ranked center in the 2026 recruiting class, according to Grant Hughes.
North Carolina reshaped a considerable portion of its frontcourt this offseason, replacing last year’s starters in Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar. Many expected Veesaar’s return, but with a rising draft stock and pro-royal play, Veesaar declared for the NBA Draft.
Keita is projected to be a lottery pick in the 2027 NBA Draft, so Malone’s ability to land him will prove wonderful for future roster construction. UNC can still add uncommitted players, either through the transfer portal or through high school recruiting, so perhaps Keita’s commitment will spur additional pledges.

On the Tar Heels’ 2026-27 roster, Keita will likely battle Florida Atlantic transfer Maxim Logue for minutes. Logue has the advantage of playing college basketball, with 49 appearances between Oregon State and Florida Atlantic. Keita has professional experience, something any current college program craves, especially as NIL money makes the college game increasingly professional.
Luka Bogavac transferred to Chapel Hill from overseas during the 2025 offseason, proving valuable for a reliable scorer switching between the starting lineup and the bench.
With Keita being the newest international star to join North Carolina, there are high expectations within the fan base. Will it live up to its new 5-star status?
