What may not help the current situation is the rejection of the defender’s post-match comments about chasing current league leaders Bayern Munich.

Schlotterbeck is expected to make his final decision on whether to stay at Signal Iduna Park or leave in mid-March.

If the Waiblingen native stays in Dortmund, he could have a release clause of €60 million, but it could drop to €50 million if Niko Kovac’s team fails to qualify for the Champions League.

Schlotterbeck’s two options:

The 26-year-old has two realistic options regarding his future. The first is for him to stay at Dortmund and extend his contract at the club beyond 2027.

The other is to sign for Real Madrid. The Spanish side are the only club showing genuine interest in Schlotterbeck and with the futures of compatriot Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba up in the air, Eder Militao is injury prone.

However, Madrid will only make decisions on transfers once the coach for next season is confirmed.
