CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — While communities like Mooresville and Statesville have been embroiled in debates over approving the construction of data centers, the state’s largest has already been given the green light for the west end of Charlotte.

Preliminary sketches show the site along Moores Chapel Road between Interstate 85 and Wilkinson Blvd. could house a 3 million-square-foot data facility. The land was acquired and is being developed by Austin, Texas-based Digital Realty.

Statesville leaders move forward with proposed data center rezoning request

The Charlotte City Council approved the 156-acre rezoning in May, setting up the transformation of a wooded area into a potentially massive computing center. Trees have been cut down on the site. It is unknown when formal construction will begin.

Just across the street, bar owner Tony Simonds isn’t sure what to make of the plans, adding that he’s seen a lot of changes in the area in recent years, without much impact on foot traffic.

Tony Simonds owns the bar across from the 156-acre property.

“I get very few of them,” he told Andy Weber of the Queen City News.

It may be unclear what this could mean for his business, but he acknowledged that more people in the area could still mean more customers. Tony said he’s ready to serve you, on one condition.

“As long as you act like you have good sense, come in, you’re more than welcome.”
