After splitting his college career between the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Alcorn State University, Cherelus broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets in 2023. The Panthers would later claim him off waivers following initial roster cuts that summer.

Cherelus has appeared in 33 starts for Carolina since then. Last season, the 27-year-old defender posted career highs in games played (14), starts (four), combined tackles (32) and passes defended (one).

In addition to Cherelus, the Panthers have also re-signed wide receiver David Moore, tight end James Mitchell, defensive lineman LaBryan Ray, outside linebacker Thomas Incoom, cornerbacks Akayleb Evans and Robert Rochell, safety Isaiah Simmons and long snapper JJ Jansen.
