Nueva Delhi (AP)-The rescuers were touring the Hill de Darjeeling district in the northeast of India, on Monday for missing persons one day after land landslides caused by strong downpours killed at least 24, the authorities said.

The teams of the rescuers of the Indian army and the disaster force were looking for the disappeared who fear trapped under mounds of debris, said Udayan Guha, Minister of Development of the Western Bengal State.

The downpours and the road damage hindered the efforts to reach several affected villages, authorities said. Television News showed rescue workers using Earth Movers to clear the debris.

The landslides caused by heavy rains destroyed houses and infrastructure and left hundreds of tourists stranded in Darjeeling over the weekend. The rain also caused two Iron Bridges Collapsen, said Western Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a position on X.

The weather department of India foreshadow heavy rains in the region until Tuesday.

Clouds, floods and landslides have caused a significant loss of lives and properties in recent months throughout India. The sudden floods swept an entire village in the northern state of Uttarakhand in August.

On Sunday, at least 44 people died in Nepal due to landslides and floods caused by severe rains.

Experts say that the climate change caused by humans is intensifying the monzones of southern Asia, which are traditionally extended from June to September and again from October to December. The rains, once predictable, now arrive in erratic bursts that throw extreme amounts of water in short periods, followed by dry spells.
