  • Keegan Bradley will lead the American team, while Luke Donald returns to the European team captain for the second time.
  • Captains influence the Ryder Cup through players matches and by establishing alignment for single matches.

Farmingdale, NY – never before the Capites of the Ryder Cup have been forced to put aside such a close friendship in the name of the competition as Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald.

The two are connected more than just being founding partners in 1000 North, the Luxury Jupiter restaurant or other members of the Bear’s Club. Bradley clearly appreciates friendship due to the “respect” that Donald showed him 14 years ago when he joined the PGA tour for the first time. And Donald sees Bradley as someone who set out to send text messages and congratulate when he reached professional milestones.

“I went on tour in 2011 and he was number 1 in the world,” Bradley said during the joint press conference on September 22 at Bethpage Black that began the Ryder Cup week.

“He was the first real player … the best player to deal with respect. I couldn’t believe that ‘he came out and play with Luke Donald, who is the best player in the world.’ I loved to hang out and have a drink with Luke Donald.”

When Bradley learned that he would be the next man to captain the American team, he set out to tell Donald, who had already been selected to lead the Europeans for the second consecutive time, before anyone else.

“Out of respect for him, because we have spoken a lot about the Ryder Cup throughout our lives,” Bradley said.

Keegan Bradley, Luke Donald will put aside friendship in the Ryder Cup

When the United States and Europe insist on September 26, day 1 of the Ryder Cup, once again, Bradley will be the newcomer trying to chase the veteran.

Bradley, the 39 -year -old who was born in Vermont, will lead an American team who tries to avenge a five -point defeat against Europeans two years ago in Rome. Donald, the 47 -year -old English, will seek a repeated performance in his second place as a European captain.

But each one will lead their teams for a very emotional week knowing so much about their counterpart.

“Keegan is someone I have supported,” Donald said. “If it went well in a tournament, he won a tournament, he would send him a text message. And in the same way. We definitely have a good strong friendship, and there is mutual respect there. We understand that both are in the sand. We understand exactly the difficulties of the professional golf and we celebrate our victories together.

“I think we will have a drink on Sunday night regardless of the result.”

Bradley and Donald, who live 4 miles away in the north of Palm Beach County, will be forced to put aside their friendship for three days in what is expected to be a very disputed Ryder cup.

“It’s good to have your captain in front of you, someone you know and respect a lot,” said Donald. “We are also very, very competitive, and that will not change this week.”

But how does the captain even in such an individual sport? Certainly, Bradley or Donald are not raising their hands to form an ‘T’ when things are not going well. There is no time in golf.

And they are not devising any play that can open to Scottie Scheffler in Green 18 for a touch. Or Rory Mcilroy approaches a Shane Lowry choice to establish an easy approach.

Where they will have a strong voice is with the pairings for the two four Fourballs sessions, and the order in which they send their 12 players for singles games on the last day.

A large part of that will be determined by the analysis, but the players will also have a great voice about who they are treading the Tee box.

“There is so much preparation that you expect as you expect as a captain that you have some kind of influence on the final result,” Donald said. “Ultimately, it is my work to make those guys in the mood work at the highest level they can perform in the golf course.

“If things go wrong, then there will be many questions aimed at me, and that is the responsibility you assume as captain.”

Zach Johnson criticized for us falling into the Ryder Cup hole in 2023

All Bradley has to do is look back in Rome and the criticisms that Captain Zach Johnson took for the United States to run the first day when Europe jumped to an advantage of 6.5-1.5.

Johnson was questioned above all, from his captain’s elections, ironically to exclude Bradley, until his preparation. However, the players finally assumed responsibility saying that they deserved the fault of their low performance, and not Johnson.

“My main objective is to put these players in their best position to play well,” Bradley said. “But ultimately, players are going to decide the Ryder Cup.”

Donald did his job in Rome, taking Europe to a victory at home. Now, Bradley has the task of avengeing that loss and making sure that the United States does not do something that has happened only once in the last nine competitions of the Ryder Cup.

Since 2006, the local team has won eight of the last nine Cups of Ryder, being the atypical value that meets for a dramatic return in 2012 in Medinah Country Club.

“I know how you can gather a group of players,” Bradley said about Donald. “I am very aware of how incredible a captain is. As far as I’m concerned, it is one of the best European captains in history. It is a high task for me to coincide with Luke Donald.”
