TANGIER, Morocco (AP) — Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly will miss the African Cup of Nations round of 16 match after being sent off in his 100th appearance for the team.

Koulibaly, 34, who led Senegal to victory in the 2021 edition of the tournament, was sent off in the 71st minute of a 3-0 win over Benin in Group D in Tangier on Tuesday.

Koulibaly was initially given a yellow card for his foul on Aiyegun Tosin, when he stepped on the back of the Benin striker’s ankle with his boot, but it was upgraded to red after a VAR review.

His absence made little difference as Cherif Ndiaye converted a stoppage-time penalty to seal the victory and Senegal won Group D, ensuring they remain in Tangier for their first knockout match on Saturday against a third-placed team from Groups B, E or F.
