Fans of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have probably heard what Sonny Gray said just a week ago.

Gray stated that he never wanted to play for the Yankees, although his initial press conference with New York suggested otherwise.

However, based on the latest from general manager Brian Cashman, it appears that Gray was told to lie about how he felt during his time in New York. Gray was going to be a free agent and didn’t want to hurt his market.

“He said, ‘My agent, Bo McKinnis, told me to do that. He told me to lie. It wouldn’t be good for my free agency to say there are certain places I don’t want to go, so go out there and make sure you say…’ “He told me that after being with us for a long time,” Cashman said, according to the NY Post.

In response to those comments, Gray’s agent, Bo McKinnis, strongly suggested that all of Cashman’s comments were false.

“So, Brian is trying to make people believe that I told Sonny to, in Cashman’s words, ‘lie’ to the guy in the minor league video to try to get Sonny to the Yankees, even though, according to Cashman, Sonny didn’t want to be with the Yankees, to later somehow help Sonny’s free agency,” McKinnis texted the outlet.

It’s hard to say who’s right or wrong here, since agents aren’t going to say their clients are lying, but Cashman doesn’t have much reason to lie right now either.

The reality is that no one should lie about the 36-year-old Gray, even though he’s still a decent arm.
