An attempt to recover a goat, stranded at the bottom of a bridge arch, prompted an emergency call to rescue its rescuer.
Three fire and police teams were sent to Longtown Bridge in Carlisle, Cumbria, after it was reported that someone had entered the water while trying to reach the animal.
They had managed to free themselves but, to “avoid a repeat incident”, trained firefighters were sent into the water to recover the animal, Longtown Fire Station said in a Facebook post.
Rescuers pushed the goat to shore, where it was captured upstream, in what firefighters described as a “satisfactory conclusion.”
Crews from Longtown, Carlisle West and Carlisle East fire stations were called to the rescue, along with Cumbria Police and North West Ambulance Service.
In their post, Longtown Fire Station said: “Overall a satisfactory conclusion but please never attempt to rescue him yourself.
“Call emergency services, who are trained and equipped for situations like this.”
