Asia is set to lead the global capacity expansion of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) by 2030, mainly due to growing demand from the textile and packaging industries. The region maintains its status as a global manufacturing hub, driven by high consumer demand for PTA-based products such as polyester fibers and PET packaging.

Asia is expected to add PTA production capacity of 28.8 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) between 2025 and 2030 from nine planned and four announced projects. China, India and Brunei account for capacity additions in the region, with China set to lead, achieving 17.2 mtpa capacity across seven upcoming projects by 2030.

The largest capacity additions in the region are expected to come from three Chinese projects, each with a capacity of 3 mtpa. Two are in Guangxi: Plant 1 and Plant 2 of Guangxi Tongkun Petrochemical Qinzhou PTA. Plant 1 is likely to begin operations in 2025 and plant 2 in 2030. The third project is in Fujian: the Fujian Fuhaichuang Petrochemical Zhangzhou PTA plant. It is also expected to come into operation in 2025.

The other major projects in the region are Reliance Industries’ Dahej Purified PTA Plant 3 in India, which is expected to come online in 2027 with a capacity of 3 mtpa, and Brunei Hengyi Industries’ Pulau Muara Besar Purified PTA Plant in Brunei, which is expected to come online in 2029 with 2.5 mtpa.

The Middle East is the other key region expected to add 2.5 mtpa capacity by 2030. The capacity additions in the Middle East come from two planned projects in Saudi Arabia: Jazan PTA Pan-Asia PET Resin Plant 1 and Plant 2. Both are located in Jazan city and are expected to witness a capacity addition of 1.25 mtpa during the outlook period.

More details on global PTA capacity and capital expenditure analysis can be found in GlobalData’s new report, ‘Polyethylene terephthalate (PTA) industry capacity and capital expenditure forecasts with details of all active and planned plants through 2030’.
