So far, six teams have booked their tickets for the next stage: defending champions India, co-hosts Sri Lanka, West Indies, England, South Africa and New Zealand. There are still two places up for grabs in Super 8.

Currently, eight of the 20 competing teams have been officially eliminated from the Super 8 race, leaving six teams mathematically in the race for the final two spots.

Two of the four groups have a complete picture of who has qualified and been eliminated. From Group C, the Windies and England are already in the Super 8, and the three remaining teams in the group – Scotland (late replacement Bangladesh), debutants Italy and Nepal – are eliminated.

And in Group D, New Zealand became the last to book their place in the Super 8s after beating Canada in their final group match. The Kiwis joined South Africa in the next round of the group. Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates and Canada are now eliminated from the race.

In the other two groups, one place is still up for grabs and only two teams (Namibia from Group A and Oman from Group B) are out of the race.

In Group A, India has progressed to the next phase and Pakistan, the United States and the Netherlands are competing for the remaining spot. The United States has played all four of its group matches and is second behind India in the points table with four points. With four points, Pakistan is third due to a lower net rate than the United States. Pakistan will face Namibia next and a win will secure their place in the Super 8. Netherlands have a match against India and are still in contention with two points.

In Group B, Sri Lanka stormed into the Super 8s with a resounding victory over Australia, leaving the Aussies on the brink of early elimination. Australia now needs a miracle to advance after two consecutive defeats – against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Zimbabwe are ahead in the race for the remaining group spot as they have two games in hand. A win against Ireland on Tuesday will take Zimbabwe into the Super 8, leaving Australia’s campaign devastated. Australia can only advance if they beat Oman by a large margin and Zimbabwe lose both their matches: against Ireland and Sri Lanka. Even a single point caused by rain will allow Zimbabwe to advance to the next round.
