The college football regular season is about a month away, and with the release of the initial CFP rankings Tuesday night, discussions have begun. It’s not all that surprising that the No. 3-ranked Texas A&M Aggies came in as the No. 3 team in the playoff standings. However, not everyone felt the same.
During coverage of the rankings show, Booger McFarland, Rece Davis and Joey Galloway discussed where they thought A&M should have been ranked. There was a strong argument that based on the analytics, Texas A&M should have been ranked No. 1. That evolved into a discussion about how much the eyeball test influenced the ranking decision. Texas A&M’s win over Notre Dame earlier in the season looks better and better for them each week, but it’s also the only win over a current Top 25 team.
A win over No. 19 Missouri could help, but it would also knock them out of the Top 25. So while it would be a quality win, it wouldn’t count as a ranked win. In reality, while these rankings are fun to debate, there is still too much football left to determine who the final CFP team will be and where they will be ranked. Coach Mike Elko only has one thing on his mind right now. Win every week and let the rest take care of themselves.
