To say that reports have been conflicting about the McCoy-Cowboys connection is an understatement.

What we know is that the Cowboys are not interested in redshirt prospects in this winning 2026 campaign. Dallas tried to get a redshirt bargain last season when they drafted injured cornerback Shevon Revel in the third round. It took a while for Revel to get to Cowboys camp, and when he finally played, he looked less than 100 percent. The Cowboys don’t want to go through that again.
McCoy, about 15 months removed from a knee injury in 2025, missed the entire 2025 season, the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine workouts. The only action McCoy has seen since his injury is in the controlled environment of his Pro Day earlier this month.
McCoy impressed at that Pro Day showing a 4.38 40-yard dash speed and running several drills, but there are still a lot of questions regarding his return to form. Once upon a time there was a brilliant prospect; 2024 (aka a long time ago). So it’s no surprise that insiders have clearly stated that he’s not an option for Dallas. However, when the Cowboys, a franchise that takes 30 visits seriously, invited McCoy to Dallas for an official visit, many were left scratching their heads at all the mixed signals.
The reality is that McCoy is not an open and shut case. His injury is not black and white, and the Cowboys’ interest is not without conditions or gray areas. Taking a closer look at McCoy might be a better effort to measure the knee, but it might also be a better effort to evaluate the man himself and assess risk.Advertisement
McCoy could be medically cleared and at the same time less than 100%. He may not be an option at age 12, but he could start to be one at age 20. McCoy could be a turnaround player like DaRon Bland or he could be someone less serious about it like Trevon Diggs. Circumstances and details matter.
The Cowboys aren’t talking out of both sides of their mouths; They are simply considering the situation for the complexity that it is. What is clear is that this is not as open and closed as previously thought.
