The Palisades Fire ultimately killed 12 people and destroyed thousands of homes as it burned the hillside neighborhoods of Pacific Palisades and the city of Malibu. Rinderknecht faces at least five years in prison if convicted on charges that also include intentional destruction by setting fire.
Lead defense attorney Steve Haney said Rinderknecht is being presented as Scapegoat Because the Los Angeles Fire Department failed to completely extinguish the January 1 fire. Jury selection is expected to last several days before opening statements begin midweek. The trial is likely to take about two weeks.
News of the trial sparked mixed reactions from Pacific Palisades residents, who have spent the past year and a half grappling with insurance claims and the bureaucracy of obtaining building permits as they try to regain normalcy in their lives.
“It brings up all the emotions over the past year and makes me think about all the suffering and chaos in the lives of all our neighbors and friends,” said Megan Wald, whose house was one of the few remaining on her block.
The streets of Palisades are now crowded with construction vehicles and workers, and the charred trees have regained their luscious green color. But much of the vacant land is overgrown with weeds, wildflowers and frame house structures. Out of more than 450 construction projects, only 17 homes have been approved for occupancy.
Wald and her family now live in nearby Brentwood, but she visits weekly to support a few businesses that have reopened, including her hair salon, her regular CVS Pharmacy and the Palisades Garden Cafe, where her children used to grab after-school snacks.
“It’s great to see the stores we know and love coming back,” Wald said. “It’s also hard to imagine what it will be like. It will never be the same.”
Fire was a central theme in Current Mayor Karen Bass Her re-election bid is championing the city’s recovery. Bass was in Ghana as part of a presidential delegation when the fire broke out. One of her competitors, a reality TV personality Spencer Prattlost his home in the fire and has made what he calls municipal incompetence a central message of his campaign. It’s not yet clear whether Pratt received enough votes in the primary to face Bass in a runoff election in November.

Lena Loh, who opened a skin care clinic in the Palisades area three months before the fire, said Rinderknecht’s trial gave her no sense of relief. She has been struggling to reopen and is looking to leave because she cannot financially support the business anymore.
“I don’t necessarily think putting him on trial will fix anything,” she said. “This is a city issue. The city needs to manage that little patch of fire better.”
