President donald trump He falsely ranted to reporters on Air Force One that food stamp recipients are “largely Democrats” while pressuring his opponents on the government shutdown.
Two federal judges — Judge Indira Talwani in Massachusetts and the judge John McConnell in Rhode Island, ruled Friday that the White House must continue funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as Food Stamps amid the government shutdown.
Before that news broke, Trump met with reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Mar-a-lago and his Great Gatsby-themed Halloween party. When asked about the program, Trump made a false claim:
REPORTER: Regarding SNAP benefits expiring tomorrow, people (INAUDIBLE) are willing to offer canned and non-perishable goods for trick-or-treaters. Is there a possibility, like you did with the military moving funds, is there a possibility to do that?
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Well, it always is, but all Democrats have to do is say, let’s go. I mean, you know, they don’t have to do anything. They don’t, all they have to do is, let’s say, keep the government open. And we only need five Democrats.
But they have become a radical left party. They have really done it, they have become a very radical leftist partner. And they have lost their minds. They have lost their minds. All they have to do is say the government is open and that’s it.
And you know, to a large extent, when you talk about SNAP, you’re largely talking about Democrats, but… I’m president. I want to help everyone. I want to help Democrats and Republicans.
But when you talk about SNAP, if you look at it, it’s largely about Democrats harming their own people. Thank you all very much.
Of the 30 states Trump won in 2024, 25 of them are more reliant on SNAP than the national average.
