Two people were killed and three others, including two California Highway Patrol officers, were injured early Saturday in a crash in San Leandro after the CHP pursued a speeding vehicle on Interstate 580.

Officers were attempting to stop a white Mercedes sedan that was speeding west on the freeway in Castro Valley around 3:40 a.m., according to the CHP. After the driver refused to stop, the chase continued on westbound Interstate 238 in San Leandro, the agency said.

When the driver attempted to exit onto East 14th Street, the vehicle crashed into a sound wall. The two officers chasing the driver tried to take the same exit and also crashed into the wall, the CHP said.

The Mercedes crash killed the driver and a passenger, while another passenger was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, according to the agency. The CHP officers were hospitalized at major but non-life-threatening agencies.

The CHP, which is investigating the crash, said it is unclear why the Mercedes crashed into the noise wall and why its vehicle did not hit the other car.
