RICHMOND, VIRGINIA– Two people were killed and seven others were wounded in a shooting during an apparent street fight in an entertainment district, the police chief in Richmond, Virginia, said on Saturday.
The fight occurred around 2:45 a.m., and a man and a woman died at the scene, Police Chief Rick Edwards told reporters.
Edwards said a police officer in the area saw a “huge commotion” with speeding cars. The man and woman suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Edwards said.
He added that three other men and four women were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
He added: “It appears that a battle began, individuals intervened in that battle, and shots were fired.” He added that there were at least two gunmen.
Edwards did not say whether anyone had been arrested. An email seeking more information was sent to the police department on Saturday.
Several family members gathered to celebrate a birthday in the historic Choco Bottom area, known for its restaurants and clubs, when a woman was caught in the crossfire and died, WTVR-TV reported.
