The high -level political forum 2025, or HLPF, follows two successful UN conferences focused on vital development issues: one in June in Nice, France, dedicated to oceanic protection, and another in Seville, Spain, focused on promoting the financing of sustainable initiatives.
The Sevilla meeting ended with a strong call to action: to urgently address the annual mass deficit of $ 4 billion in the financing necessary to achieve the SDGs. He also highlighted the pressing need for greater investment and a deep reform of the global financial system.
Held under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the forum will take place from July 14 to 23 at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Here are five key things to know about this year’s forum:
1. It’s about accelerating action
HLPF is the United Nations main platform to trace global progress in sustainable development objectives. It meets every year to review the efforts of the countries, share solutions and press a faster action to meet the 2030 objectives
The 2025 forum is being convened under the subject:
Advance of sustainable, inclusive solutions based on science and evidence for the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and its sustainable development objectives that do not leave anyone behind.
This reflects a growing sense of urgency. SDG 14: Life under water
SDG 17: Associations for Objectives
These objectives cover a wide range of problems, from public health and gender equity to economic resilience and marine conservation.
The SDG 17, which is reviewed annually, highlights the importance of revitalizing global associations and improving the means of implementation, including financing, to which nations committed themselves last month in Seville.
3. Countries will share their progress, voluntarily
A distinctive seal of the HLPF is the National Reviews volunteer (VNRS) -Autoevaluations of the Member States on their progress towards the SDGs. In 2025, dozens of countries are expected to present their VNR, offering information about persistent achievements and challenges.
These revisions encourage transparency, peer learning and responsibility. They also provide a platform for civil society and other interested parties to be directly involved with governments on development priorities.

4. It is not just governments

With only five years to meet the 2030 Agenda, the HLPF 2025 marks a critical turning point.
It is more than an annual check-in. This year’s session comes at a time when science, solidarity and urgent action must converge. It will help to establish the tone for the next Sustainable Development Goals Summit in 2027, where world leaders will take stock of collective progress and determine the final impulse around 2030.
