The last three gold medal winners have been Finland, Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) and Canada, in 2014. Four years earlier, in 2010, Canada took home gold once again, beating the United States in the final in Vancouver.

The United States has 11 total medals in ice hockey competition, but has not taken home the gold medal since 1980, more than 45 years ago. His only other gold medal came in 1960.
But 2026 will mark the first time since 2014 that NHL players will participate in Olympic ice hockey. Historically, the NHL and the International Olympic Committee have failed to reach an agreement to allow NHL players to participate. In both 2018 and 2022 this was the case, affecting the US, Canada and many other countries.
With the inclusion of the NHL once again, Canada is the favorite for the gold medal in Milan. The United States trails Canada as the second seed, but is touted as the team to beat in women’s ice hockey.
