Liverpool breaks Sunderland’s resistance with a decisive header from the captain

Control established through possession
From the first exchanges, Liverpool prevailed in the contest. Circulating the ball with confidence and pace, they recorded 68 per cent possession in the first half, pinning Sunderland into a compact defensive shape. While clear-cut opportunities were initially limited, the visitors’ control was unmistakable, with sustained pressure forcing Sunderland to react in defence.

Florian Wirtz emerged as Liverpool’s most inventive departure during this period. The German midfielder tested Robin Roefs with a strong shot from distance on the half hour mark, and the Sunderland goalkeeper reacted quickly to deflect the ball. Moments later, Wirtz hit the post with a left foot before heading in, again denied by Roefs.

Defensive resolve of the hosts
Despite Liverpool’s dominance of the ball, Sunderland’s organization managed to keep the game goalless at half-time. Regis Le Bris’ team effectively restricted central space, limiting Liverpool to efforts from less dangerous areas. Their attacking threat, however, remained minimal, which was reflected in just five touches inside the Liverpool penalty area during the first half.
After the restart, Sunderland showed greater offensive intent. Captain Trai Hume fired over as the hosts tried to upset Liverpool’s rhythm, but the breakthrough came the other way.
Van Dijk offers decisive moment
Shortly after the hour mark, a corner from Mohamed Salah caused chaos inside the six-yard box. Van Dijk rose higher, his header was pushed onto the goal line by Habib Diarra, the final touch took the ball into the net. It was the captain’s fourth goal of the season and a reward for Liverpool’s sustained pressure.

Injury concerns temper victory
Liverpool’s evening was not without concerns. Wataru Endo, who made his first league start of the season at right back due to Dominik Szoboszlai’s suspension, produced a defensively assured performance. He won seven duels, the most of any player on the field, before suffering an uncomfortable ankle injury shortly after the goal. The Japan international was stretchered off and replaced by Joe Gomez following his recent return from injury.
The victory, only Liverpool’s second league victory in 2026, moves them two points behind fifth-placed Chelsea, while Sunderland remain in 11th place after their first home defeat of the campaign.
