The German Bundesliga team recently suffered a 1-2 defeat at Heidenheim, but is still ninth in its national rankings. In Europe, Freiburg is in an even better position. Eleven points from the first Five games (undefeated) put them in a solid fourth place!
We are especially interested in two names from coach Julian Schuster’s team. First there is our ex. junior forward adamu, who has been a regular starter for Freiburg in this season’s UEFA Europa League and has scored two goals. In defence, Austrian international Philipp Lienhart is a key player. On the contrary, the locals have already faced rivals such as Karim Onisiwowho scored a total of four goals against Freiburg during his stay in Mainz.

Freiburg is a team that has been a key part of the German Bundesliga for years and qualified for the Europa League last year. They currently sit in a solid fourth place, as do five of our eight opponents who are currently in the top eight. They rely heavily on their collective strength and are very cohesive as a team. With Christian Streich they were already very compact and Julian Schuster has continued it. A match against a German Bundesliga team is also always exciting. In Freiburg we not only want to perform well, but also to be more efficient than until now.

In the Europa League we are in a situation where we don’t need to look at the table because we have to concentrate fully on the next match. That is already difficult enough, considering that we are playing away from home against the fourth-placed team. But we go into this match with maximum motivation and with the aim of scoring points in Freiburg.

How the UEFA Europa League league phase works
Since last season, a league format has replaced the group stage in UEFA competitions. As in the Champions League, each UEFA Europa League team faces eight different opponents, with four home and four away games.

At the end of the eight rounds, a general classification of the 36 participating teams is established. The top eight will advance directly to the round of 16. The teams ranked 9th to 24th will face each other in a round-trip play-off for the remaining places in the knockout phase.
Other changes compared to previous years: after elimination, relegation to the UEFA Conference League is no longer possible, as was previously the case with the third-placed teams in each group. In addition, the league phase will also last until the end of January.
