🏀Game of the weekend

Forty-eight seconds into the fourth quarter, things couldn’t have been worse for Scituate women’s basketball.

What happened the rest of the way could be the spark the Spartans need to close out the second half of the regular season.

With seven points down and less than 4:30 left, Scituate ran out and Addi Naylor was in the right place at the right time, making a putback with 1:20 left to play that turned out to be the winning basket in a 35-33 victory over Putnam Science Academy.

Steph Coro, Scituate girls basketball coach

The teams battled hard in their Saturday matinee session with the Connecticut team taking a 30-26 lead after three quarters. Putnam hit a free throw and layup at the line on his first two possessions of the quarter to extend the lead to seven, and with the defense in control, it looked like they had enough to win.

Scituate had other ideas. The Spartans’ comeback was slow and steady, starting with a layup by Naylor with 4:12 left. After a minute of scoreless basketball, Brooklyn Rusillo He came up with a layup and 50 seconds later, Aliana Solis He buried a three-pointer from the left wing that tied the game at 33 with 2:57 left.

Both defenses were blocked and it was difficult to get a good look. With 1:20 left, Russillo had a chance to put the Spartans ahead but his shot went long. Naylor was in perfect position on the weak side, collecting the rebound and returning it to make it 35-33. Scituate did what needed to be done on the defensive end and closed out the game.

Gabby Rusillo led Sciutate with 14 points and her sister Brooklyn nearly reached double figures, scoring nine. Naylor and Solís contributed the rest of the scoring with six points each.
