The former Chelsea midfielder and Manchester United is still strengthening in series A at the age of 37, after two years in Ligue 1 with Rennes and Lyon from his departure Romaní in the summer of 2023.

In the summer of 2022, Matic left Manchester United after five years at the end of his contract, and decided to join Rome with a free transfer.

He wrote a one -year contract at the Olympic Stadio, and since then he has affirmed that he rejected the much longer contract proposals to join the Giallorossi. Matic has also affirmed that there was a promise that his contract would extend after a few months if the actions were solid enough.

Speaking in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Matic explained why his time with Rome is still a slightly painful place.

“When I left Manchester United, I chose Rome to join a project where I could stay for at least a couple of years,” Matic explained.

“I received some interesting offers with three -year proposals, and I was already taking a little. Then came the offer from Rome and Mourinho.

“At first I didn’t want to go because the offer was just for one year. Then I talked to Mourinho, with my agent. I chose Rome for him, for fans. They told me ‘a sign, and if things are going well, we will talk about a renewal as soon as January.’

Matic continued explaining that the extension of the aforementioned contract never arrived.

“At first, with my family, we did not have the right stability. In my opinion, I played well and was fine. But in January, no one knocked on my door. I tried to get in touch, and they told me that if I played more than 50% of the games, I would have given me an automatic renewal, but that had not agreed the previous summer.

“I had this feeling that I was constantly in trial, but I was an experienced player, I deserved more respect and in February, I told the club that I would give my best until the end of the season to take the team as much as possible. I think I always gave the best. Then, at the end of the season, I decided to leave.

“The problem was that people promised things and it wasn’t good. I was missing stability and I didn’t feel good about that. I did the best I could, I felt the support of fans, who respected me more than the club. Rennes came hitting, offering a three -year contract, which meant more stability.”
