What are Deaflympics?
The Deaflympics is an international sporting event organized by deaf people for deaf people. Deaf and hard of hearing athletes compete at the Deaflympics using visual cues. The Paralympic Games were first held in Paris in 1924, making them older than the Paralympic Games. Currently, deaf athletes are not eligible to compete in the Paralympic Games (unless they have a qualifying disability).
UK Deaf Sport (which oversees Great Britain’s Deaflympics team), writes about the difference between the Paralympic Games and the Deaflympics on its FAQ page, explaining: “Many deaf people do not consider themselves disabled, particularly in physical or intellectual ability. Rather, we consider ourselves part of a cultural and linguistic minority.”
