Wiggins, Miss. Five people were killed when a train collided with a pickup truck in rural Mississippi, authorities said Friday.
All five people killed were in the truck, Stone County Coroner Wayne Flory said. The only surviving passenger, a 23-year-old woman, was airlifted to hospital, Fleury said. There were no reports of anyone being injured on the train.
The railway authority said in a statement that the accident occurred when a freight train in the Canadian Pacific city of Kansas City collided with a vehicle at a crossing. The location was near the town of Wiggins, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) northwest of Biloxi.
The Stone County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, the company said.
The railway company said: “Our sincere condolences to the families of the victims of this tragedy.”
The truck driver, Ryan C. Peterson, 26, and front-seat passenger, Christina Carver, 45, were among those killed, Flory said. Two of Carver’s daughters, 22-year-old Emily Chamblee and 20-year-old Sarabeth Chamblee, also died, as did 23-year-old DeMarcus Perkins.
