Authorities have not revealed a possible motive for the Leland shooting, but the FBI says it may have been “provoked by a dispute between several individuals.” At least nine people were arrested, and several were charged with capital murder.
Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, September 28
A man opened fire in a Michigan church and set it on fire, killing four people and burning the church to the ground. The FBI said the gunman, who was killed during a law enforcement response, was motivated by “anti-religious beliefs” against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Two adults and three children died in a murder-suicide in southern Oregon, police said. The children’s ages were 11, 9, and 7 years. Police found the bodies in a home near Grants Pass after one of the victims missed work.

Four people were shot and killed at a bar in a small town about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Missoula. The man accused of committing the murder managed to evade arrest for a week.

The parents, grandmother and uncle of an infant who was found abandoned in the front yard in a wooded area about 40 miles (65 kilometers) away were shot. Authorities said the man accused of murder is the boyfriend of the infant’s grandmother’s sister.

A man fatally shot his estranged girlfriend and three of her children before turning the gun on himself in a South Florida home, according to local reports. The man, a father of two, later died in hospital. A fourth child was shot but survived.
