Winston-Salem, North Carolina – A stabbing incident at a high school in central North Carolina on Tuesday left one student dead and another injured, authorities said.
Officers at North Forsyth High School in Winston-Salem called for help shortly after 11 a.m., Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough said.
Kimbrough said in a press conference: “We responded to a quarrel between two students,” adding that “there was a loss of life.”
In an email to families and staff, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Superintendent Don Phipps said one student died and another was injured.
Kimbrough said he would not take questions at the news conference, citing the ongoing investigation. Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Krista Karcher later said that a stabbing had occurred, and that the injured person had been treated at the hospital and released.
No information about possible charges was discussed at the press conference. In a video later posted on social media, Kimbrough said there was no threat to the community.
He added: “There are no suspects we are looking for.” “We have got this part of the investigation under control.”
Gov. Josh Stein, in a message on the social media platform X, called what happened “shocking and horrific” and said he was praying for all students and their loved ones.
Phipps, who started his position last week, said at the news conference that it was “any teacher’s worst nightmare. We hurt when our students hurt, and that is the ultimate hurt we can feel.”
North Forsyth High School will be closed Wednesday, and a crisis team will be formed for staff and when students return, he said.
