Mint Hill, North Carolina – A man was shot and killed Friday after shooting at police in suburban Charlotte, North Carolina, during a child custody exchange, authorities said.
Two Mint Hill police officers were also injured in the shooting and are in critical condition, Mint Hill Police said in a statement on social media.
Mint Hill officers were called to the Exchange at the Edible Arrangement store around 10:45 a.m. Friday. The man pulled out a gun and began shooting, and officers returned fire, authorities said. Police say he died in the shootout.
Employees at a nearby Empire Pizza restaurant were on a smoke break and saw two officers enter the store, then saw one of them leading the other out with blood on their hands, Empire Pizza manager Kevin Faim told reporters at the scene.
Mint Hill is a suburb of about 27,000 people located about 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of Charlotte.
