Josemar Cabrera, 36, arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday evening after being detained in Peru since late August, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The District Attorney’s Office filed a charge of premeditated murder against him. It was not known Sunday whether he had an attorney.
Sheila Cabrera’s body was found on August 16 at the bottom of a bridge in the Angeles National Forest south of the city of Lancaster in Los Angeles County, where the couple lives with their three young sons. The 33-year-old was reported missing on August 12.
Homicide investigators said they found surveillance footage of Josemar Cabrera dragging a heavy object wrapped “in a large piece of material” from their apartment complex. The police department said that when the victim’s body was discovered, it was wrapped in a similar material.
The suspect fled to Peru with the couple’s three children. The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on August 16 on social media that it had returned the children to Los Angeles to reunite them with their mother’s family.
The cause of Sheila Cabrera’s death has not been revealed.
